India's Biodiversity Challenge

India is one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries, harbouring about 7–8% of all recorded species on just 2.4% of Earth's land area. Yet its formal protected area (PA) network — comprising National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Conservation Reserves, and Community Reserves — covers only about 5% of the country's land area. Rapidly expanding protected area networks requires enormous land, political capital, and funding — challenges that have made the 30×30 target appear daunting for biodiversity-rich but land-scarce countries like India. The anchor species study proposes a strategic shortcut: protect the habitats of a small number of well-chosen species and gain disproportionate biodiversity and carbon benefits.

The Anchor Species Concept

The study builds on — and advances — the concept of umbrella species: species whose large habitat requirements, when protected, simultaneously shelter many other species. Methodology

Researchers created high-resolution Area of Habitat (AoH) models for more than 2,000 vertebrate species across India's diverse ecosystems. They narrowed the analysis to 160 species — all listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (highest protection category) and rated as Endangered or Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List. For each of these 160 species, the researchers measured the number of co-occurring vertebrates and the above-ground carbon storage within the species' habitat.
